Tanzania Safari Overview

Hailed as one of the ‘Seven Natural Wonders of Africa’, the annual migration of nearly 2 million, wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras across the Serengeti ecosystem is one of the most sought-after natural spectacles in the world. Moving in a clockwise direction, the greatest mass movement of land mammals on the entire globe, traverses through the Serengeti Plains in Tanzania and the Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya, and then back again in search of greener pastures forming one big circle. And hot on their heels are Africa’s feared predators’- lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, crocodiles. The migratory period and pattern is largely dependent on the vagaries of weather and the abundance of rain ripened grass.

The incredible sight of a million hooves pounding the plains and trying to cross river and forest has been an enormous draw for wildlife tourists. To witness the spectacle that has been made familiar by the National Geographic, drawing gasps and awes in equal measure, be present in May- June when the herds cross the Grumeti River in western Serengeti. If you miss that, you can catch them in July-October when the wildebeest are in northern Serengeti plains and are precariously crossing the Mara River in thousands trying to escape the jaws of the crocodiles. Those dramatic scenes you witnessed on TV unravel here!

The period from December-March is the calving season and you can witness it in the southern Serengeti plains.
